Description
Description
"After years of bureaucratic wrangling, Lam Ton, a Vietnamese [refugee] who settled and found success in Chicago, was given permission to return to Vietnam. He went back, accompanied by a WTTW camera crew, and traveled throughout his homeland, observing and commenting on the changes his native land has gone through in the years since he left."'Vietnam: A Chicagoan Goes Home' is both the story of a country that has been recovering, almost invisible to the rest of the world, from almost forty years of war, and the story of one man's reunion with his past. "Showing viewers what contemporary Vietnam looks like is a difficult and worthwhile endeavor, but showing viewers many aspects of life there, as 'A Chicagoan Goes Home' did is extraordinary. To add to that the story of Lam Ton's return brings a personal touch to the program. Lam's comments and thoughts give viewers an insight into the country they would not get elsewhere. "In addition to focusing attention on Vietnam, the program also brought the city's Vietnamese community to Chicagoan's attention. That occurred when other Vietnamese refugees in the city began to accuse Ton of being a turncoat. The events of that fight made people in Chicago aware of the large number of Vietnamese expatriates in Chicago and their virulent hatred for the conquerors of their homeland. "'Vietnam: A Chicagoan Goes Home' enlightened viewers by showing them a 'new' land and a 'new' world in their own backyard."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
