- Description
- Episode Description
- The increasing bitterness, demoralization and despair of Negro youths in San Francisco - a city of widely advertised liberal and cosmopolitan traditions - is explored in an on-the-spot and voiceover report. Negro author James Baldwin is taken on a tour of San Francisco by Orville Luster, Executive Director of Youth for Service. The tour takes them through the Hunters Point area, San Francisco's so-called "black ghetto," where 80 percent of the people are Negroes; through the Fillmore area, the "little Harlem"; and through the city's Western Addition redevelopment project - described by Mr. Baldwin as a "Negro removal" project. Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Luster talk to groups of Negroes from each area, as well as leaders of the Negro civic organizations and "action groups". James Baldwin, is one of the leading spokesmen of the Negro and his cause. Mr. Baldwin is considered one of the top writers in the literary tradition of the 1960s. TAKE THIS HAMMER: a 1963 production for National Educational Television by KQED-TV, San Francisco's educational television station. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
